Irish Sign Language Services

Irish Sign Language (ISL) is the indigenous language of the Irish Deaf community. It is a visual, spatial language with its own unique grammar. Communication happens not only through the hands, but also through facial expression and body movement. ISL is distinct from other sign languages such as British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL).

At Irish Sign Language Services, we support the use of ISL use across frontline health, education and social services. Our tutors are highly qualified and highly experienced, so that every single student receives the highest level of training, tailored to their individual needs.

Our core course runs across three to four levels, from Beginner through to Advanced. Learners attend regular two-hour sessions, building up 120–150 hours of learning over a typical three- to four-year journey.

Our courses have 4 levels

  • LEVEL 1

    In this beginner course, students are introduced to the fundamentals of Irish Sign Language as used within the Irish Deaf community. A pass in the Level One examination allows progression to the next level.

  • LEVEL 2

    The course focuses on practical communication skills. Learners are also introduced to aspects of the Deaf community and relevant assistive technologies. Successful completion of the Certificate examination allows entry to the Level Three course.

  • LEVEL 3

    This course develops a comprehensive range of skills required for effective communication with Deaf people. Passing the Level Three examination completes the standard Irish Sign Language (ISL) programme.

  • LEVEL 4

    This course is designed for learners who wish to achieve a higher level of proficiency in ISL. It introduces additional modules beyond the previous courses and requires ongoing interaction with members of the Deaf community.
